History of Mine Safety and Health Legislation in the USA

In 1891, Congress passed the first federal statute governing mine safety. This 1891 law was relatively modest legislation that applied only to mines in US territories, and, among other things, established minimum ventilation requirements at underground coal mines and prohibited operators from employing children under 12 years of age. In 1910, following a decade in which the number of coal mine fatalities exceeded 2000 annually, Congress established the Bureau of Mines as a new agency in the …

Burning Calories: Drink Ice Water

For anyone trying to lose weight, this question is bound to raise a lot of excitement.

Surely losing weight cannot be such a simple issue, can it?

Well, the answer is YES!

You can actually lose calories by drinking ice water. Your body loses calories in the process of warming this ice water to the body temperature. Now any enthusiast, must surely be thinking, if we can lose weight by drinking ice water, can we lose a large amount of calories if we drink lots of ice water?

Well, to answer this question we have to look at some simple calculations.

First of all we need to distinguish between calories and Calories. Calories (i.e. with a big c) are used to denote the amount of energy that is contained in food. Where as calorie with a small c is used to denote the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.

Another interesting fact is that it takes, 1 Calorie to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius. So when you are drinking a 140-Calorie can of cola, you are in fact ingesting 140,000 calories in your body. This is the same when you burn say 100 Calories working out, this means that you have actually burned 100,000 calories.

The main purpose of telling you that the definition of calories is based on the rising of temperature is to tell you an interesting fact. We have just seen that when our body raises the temperature, it burns calories, so when you drink ice cold water your body loses calories in raising that ice cold water to body temperature.

Now let us get the math right.

Our body temperature is at 37 degree Celsius.
The temperature of ice cold water can be safely said to be 0 degree Celsius.
There are 473.18 grams in 16 fluid ounces of water.

It takes 1 calorie to raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

So, if your body raises the temperature of 473.18 grams of water by 37 degree Celsius it burns 17508 calories.

But this is calorie with a small c. It actually denotes only 17.5 calories. You might be thinking that losing 17.5 Calories doesn’t count much compared to the calories we intake.

But, you are not going to drink just one 16 once glass of water are you? Even if you stick to the recommended minimum of 8 glasses of water you will end up burning 70 Calories in a day and that too by doing practically nothing. You can also increase the water intake if you want to shed a few extra pounds.

Well, although it is definite that drinking ice cold water helps you to burn calories you should not try to replace it with exercise. You should continue with all the weight reduction methods that you already on to.

You can just boost up your effort by drinking ice cold water.

Male hormones after 40

Older men have lower testosterone levels than younger men.

After the age of forty, testosterone levels in the blood decline at a rate of about one percent each year. There may be a steep drop in testosterone levels between the ages of forty-five and fifty.

There are men who do not drop their hormone levels, even well into their eighties. Some men will have a significant drop in hormone levels but show no symptoms. The rate that the hormone levels change and the symptoms that a man may exhibit is truly unique to the individual male.

If a man suffers from symptoms of decreased hormone levels he may exhibit things like a decreased sexual desire, a decrease in spontaneous erections and swollen or tender breasts.

A man will low hormone levels may suffer from loss of body hair, shrinking testes and hot flashes or sweats. Some of these symptoms can mimic menopausal symptoms in women. A man may suffer from low energy levels, depression, poor concentration, increased body fat and sleep disturbances.

So what can a man do if he is suffering from the symptoms brought about by lower testosterone levels? The treatment of low testosterone with hormone replacement therapy is controversial. Testosterone replacement therapy increase the risk for prostate cancer. At this time, testosterone replacement therapy is not the standard of care for men with low testosterone levels.

It you think you may be suffering from the side effects of low testosterone levels, you should see your doctor. It is a good idea to rule out any other health problems first. Health conditions such as liver disease, thyroid problems or kidney disease can mimic the symptoms of low testosterone.

There are herbs out there that can help with some of the symptoms of low testosterone. Ginkgo biloba and ginseng can increase energy and help with libido. These herbs increase the blood flow throughout the body. This will help you feel better and possibly solve any erectile dysfunction problems.

If you are over forty and think you may be developing symptoms of a hormone imbalance, it is important that you take good care of yourself. Cut out the junk food and start eating healthy. Get plenty of sleep and increase your water intake.

If you have any bad habits such as smoking or excessive alcohol use, now is the time to quit. These bad habits can make the symptoms of a hormone imbalance worse. It also puts you at a greater risk for heart attack and stroke as you grow older.

Get plenty of exercise. By eating right and getting exercise, you will be able maintain strength, energy and lean muscle mass. Regular exercise will also improve your mood and clear up any mental fogginess you may be experiencing.

Building Muscle After 40

As you get older, it is not as easy to build muscle as it used to be.

Building muscle after 40 may take a little more effort and it may take a little longer than it did when you were 20. But the good news is that you can build muscle no matter what your age is.

If you are just starting an exercise routine or if you haven’t exercised in a while, it is critical that you see your doctor first for a check up. You do not want to find out that you have an underlying heart problem or other medical condition during your exercise routine.

Before you start a weight training program, you need to decide what it is that you want to accomplish. Do you simply want to lose a few pounds and get toned? Do you want to add mass? Do you want to increase speed and endurance? Once you get a good idea of what it is that you want to accomplish, it will be easier to tailor a weight lifting program to your needs.

If you are just starting out, it is a good idea to get professional instruction. Joining a gym is a great way to get your own personal trainer that can tailor your weight training to your specific needs.

If you do not want to join a gym and have all of the necessary equipment at home, then make sure you have a good resource that will show you exactly what type of exercises to do. This resource may be in the form of a book or a DVD.

To avoid injury, it is critical that you warm up before you start doing any weight training. You could do some stretches and a few minutes of cardio exercise such as running on a treadmill or jumping rope to get your muscles warmed up.

You need to keep in mind, that as you grow older, your body doesn’t respond or bounce back as easy as it used to. You should gradually glide into your weight training program. If you overdo it, you are setting yourself up for injuries that you will have a hard time recovering from.

Diet is very important when starting weight training. You need to make sure that you get rid of all of the junk foods and start eating healthy, whole foods. Eating five or six small meals a day will keep your metabolism revved up and help you to burn more fat and develop more muscle.

If you smoke or drink, it’s time to quit. These poor lifestyle habits are not only unhealthy, they will impair your ability to build muscle.

Water is very important when building muscle. Muscle is made up mainly of water. If your muscles do not contain enough water, it will be hard for them to move or develop. Water also lubricates your joints. Without enough water, you could run the risk of doing irreversible damage to joints and connective tissue.

Building muscle after 40 is possible. It is just not as easy as it was when you were 20. But if you go about it the right way, you can continue to weight train the rest of your life.
