Swine Flu: How to Reduce Your Chance of Infection and Transmission to Others

April 27, 2009

Everyone wants to know what to do to prevent getting swine flu and how to keep it from infiltrating their businesses, homes and public places. The recent outbreak, which appears to have started in Mexico, is believed to have infected hundreds and killed dozens in just the last few days.

The CDC advises that anyone suspected of having the associated symptoms stay home and consult with their doctor. Do not return to work or school until 48 hours after your symptoms are gone. If your symptoms are severe, then go to a hospital but otherwise, they would prefer that you stay home to avoid spreading the disease to others in the hospital. Currently, the CDC does not believe that the general public needs to wear protective face masks at this time.

To prevent the spread within your home, business, schools or in public places, the CDC recommends that everyone practice good hygiene which includes frequent washing of the hands or use of instant hand sanitizers. An ideal choice for hand sanitizer would include one that lasts more than an instant. One problem with alcohol based products is that it stops working immediately after it evaporates. SkinWear, which contains no alcohol lasts for up to 8 hours which, given the current need for constant vigilance and protection is a smart choice.

Equally important, to prevent the transmission of the disease to others one should use an EPA approved hard surface cleaner. PureGreen24, powered by SDC, meets the recommendations by the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for infection control for care of patients with confirmed or suspected Swine Influenza A (H1N1) virus in both home and healthcare settings.

PureGreen24 is quite unique because it is safe enough to use on children’s toys and cribs (with no rinse required) but strong enough to kills MRSA, staph and all the rest.

Symptoms are the same as regular influenza including fever, lethargy, loss of appetite and coughing. Some people report runny noses, sore throats, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The youngest, oldest and people with compromised health are those at the highest risk.

Various populations, because of the nature of their professions are at higher risk as well. Those who work with large, transient populations are thought to be at higher risk. That could include chiropractors and physical therapist because they work with out the protection of rubber gloves. Bankers who hand currency may be at increased risk as well. As documented earlier, in January 2009 Reuters report indicates that banknotes may be harboring the common flu virus. Reports in the Journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology indicate that human influenza viruses can survive on currency for as long as 17 days.

It is not practical for bankers and tellers to wash their hands after each transaction, nor is it advisable to use an alchol based product 100 times a day. Again, that is why we recommend PureGreen24 to disinfect the desk tops, key boards, phone, door knobs and exam tables. The SkinWear product, which is on sale at http://jshygiene.com is prefect because it will offer you protection for up to 8 hours. In general, the flu is passed hand to hand, and self-inoculated through the membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth.

Swine Flu Vaccine Close To Reality According to Experts

Officials of the Federal government believe that the swine flu vaccine that would protect all Americans from future H1N1 outbreaks would be available by January or late November at the earliest.

HoTop of Form

wever, countries outside the United States and other nations that manufacture vaccines would take several years to generate sufficient vaccines to meet global demands.

Although manufacturing of the vaccine is faster than it was a few years back, it may still not be enough to prevent death and illness if the dreaded virus begins to spread and becomes virulent, experts predict.

In the United States, the main obstacle despite long years of effort remains to be the 50-year old technology they use in manufacturing flu vaccines. The Federal government had invested time and billions of dollars shifting to a quicker and more reliable method.

One such procedure involves cultivating the vaccine viruses in vats of cells instead of hen’s eggs. There are several small companies that are developing new methods that would pave the way for the creation of large volumes of vaccines in a span of weeks.

Dr. Greg Poland, who is the head of the vaccine research program at the Mayo Clinic, admits that the cell-based cultivation technology is not yet available while the never technologies have not yet been proven to satisfy most experts.

In addition, government officials have also not yet decided on whether or not H1N1 is a potential risk that demands production of vaccine. However, they are implementing the initial steps. Andrin Oswald, Chief Executive of the Vaccine Division of Novartis, revealed that one possible problem would be the manufacture of vaccines for swine influenza could hamper the production of seasonal flu vaccines for the coming winter. The most likely thing to do is to compromise, according to Oswald.

However, Robin Robinson, who manages the Emergency Preparation Research Program of the Department of Health and Human Services, believes that majority of manufacturing efforts of vaccine makers would have been completed by June.

According to Dr. Robinson, if the manufacture of the H1N1 vaccine would commence after that, the first 50 million to 80 million would be ready by September.

Dr. Robinson continued by saying that the entire 600 million doses, which are sufficient to give the required two shots for every American would be available by January. Adding the immune stimulant adjuvant to the vaccine could greatly reduce the required dosage, paving the way for the availability of the doses by the latter part of November.

The vaccine industry in the country is now very much capable of responding to the outbreak than it was five years back, when there were only two vaccine manufacturers and encountered a severe shortage. At present, there are five manufacturers supplying vaccines to the domestic market. The vaccine industry, which is used to be the backwater of the pharmaceutical industry, is generating new investments, as a result of government subsidies and higher cost for vaccines.

Despite of this, a World Health Organization and International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations revealed that it would still require four more years of manufacturing to meet global demands for a vaccine that would provide protection against bird flu strain that has been the major concern of health officials over the last few years.

Finally, the Federal government is encouraging manufacturers to shift their production in the United States, since all except Sanofi Aventis is now importing swine flu vaccines.

Swine Flu Can Transfer To Human Race

Have you been watching the news and/or read your daily broadsheets at all recently?  If so, you’ve probably heard the term “Swine Flu” bouncing around a lot.  While you are in the pigs fair or your hog race backyard and you were ever unlucky enough to be sneezed on by a sick pig, would you catch its flu? Not necessarily — it takes more than simply breathing in a pig’s germs (just like kissing his messy and slimy nose) for you to get sick.

While most people come down with the normal human flu at some point, it’s not really a danger to anyone but the very young (from 0 month to 7 years old) and the very old (from 60 to 90 years old).  Fortunately, the human immune system is there to recognize and neutralize the effects of the virus.  Each year, the virus mutates just slightly and most of the population is once again susceptible to the disease.  This is why a new vaccine must be created regularly to reflect the most recent influenza mutants out in the environment.

When the human flu virus mutates its external proteins, the body’s defenses still recognize them and eventually mount a response (the period of sickness occurs while the body is developing that response).  If this failed to happen, you would eventually succumb to the virus and you will die.

If a people’s immune system might not immediately stop a new human influenza infection, it does recognize that new mutant and begin building a response.  Avian and swine peplomers, on the other hand, are not easily recognized by the human system because our race did not include pressure from those particular viruses.  The animal influenza has been able to mutate enough to cross the species bridge and infect humans as well as humans we have come into a close contact with the animals (e.g. as a hog racer, we care for them and eventually sold out to the market for more extra income) that carry these viruses.

In the past this would not have been a worldwide epidemic.  An infected village might just die out in isolation (the nearest hospital was more than 10 miles away from the village).  Now it’s different: if a traveler can become infected from a hog race backyard in one region and fly thousands of miles to another, long before they experience symptoms of possible flu.

So what’s the fall away message from all of this? Can we do anything?  Well as individuals it’s wise to go through the same sanitary practices as we might during flu season.  We must be aware if our pigs catch flu during the season so that we put them instantly in a quarantine area that no other individual will take care of your pigs without protective suits.  And traveling to places which have reported Swine Flu cases probably isn’t a great idea.

There are people as you observe in different agencies and they have spent their whole lives preparing for just these kinds of epidemics and they are currently working very hard to provide the public with the best information and advice about the Swine Flu.

They are only there waiting for your attention and willingness to diagnose if you suspected yourself a possible Swine Flu virus.  They are there to help you live longer.

The Lowdown on The 2009 Swine Flu Outbreak

The 2009 outbreak of swine flu or H1N1 virus is recently hugging the limelight due to the potential harm or effects it can have on a patient or on a community. Unfortunately, the source of the virus still cannot be traced.

Before the first case in the United States was discovered, the illness was believed to have started in Mexico which eventually spread to other countries. Recently, the first case of swine flu was reported in

Costa Rica. Alarmed that it could grow into a worldwide flu epidemic, the World Health Organization of the United Nations and the Center for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) in the United States raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 5, which signifies that a “pandemic is imminent.”

While experts believed that the recent outbreak is not as fatal as previous epidemics, such as the SARS virus, health officials believe that the number of cases could go up as the new flu is expected to make its way throughout the United States.

The new swine influenza strain is apparently a new variant of four strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the strain is endemic in humans and birds and a couple are endemic in pigs.

However, according to scientists the 2009 H1N1 outbreak is of swine origin which is associated with the virus isolated in North America in 1998. To hasten understanding of the current outbreak as well as in coming up with a vaccine, scientists from Canada have completed the full genetic sequencing of the H1N1 virus.

The new strain of H1N1 has become widespread in Mexico and the United States with confirmed cases in 18 countries and suspected cases in 42 others. Travelers have been warned not to travel to affected countries such as Iceland, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, to name a few.

In addition, warnings have also been issued warnings to visitors of countries affected by the outbreak. It is advisable for visitors to see the doctor right away if they experience flu-like symptoms.

In Mexico, schools, universities, and all public events were suspended from April 24 to May 6, 2009. In the United States, over 400 schools were closed as of May 3, 2009, which included schools in Texas and about 250,000 confirmed or probable cases.

Dr. Keiji Fukuda, who is the Assistant Director-General for Health Securiy and Environment of the World Health Organization confirmed that efforts to control the outbreak is already too late and should now focus on lessening the effects of the virus. He also clarified that closing borders or limiting travel to infected areas will do little in stopping the spread of the H1N1 virus.

On April 28, 2009, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggested that as much as possible, people should avoid non-important travel to Mexico.

According to Dr. Ira Longini, who is an expert in the mathematics and statistics of epidemics, staying at home, seeking medical care, closing public venues, and making anti-flu medicines accessible can help reduce the sickness by almost two-thirds.

Finally, according to Dr. Longini, the focus of efforts is to slow transmission until there is a vaccine that can be developed and made available for controlling swine flu outbreaks.

How to do a Flu Treatment ?

The flu treatment should be done very properly.

Illness as usual looks like a common cold but it is dangerous for its complications. They are especially bad for children and old men who have weak immunity.

The flu treatment should be done like that. First of all the ill person should be isolated, given personal dishes like cups or plates, forks and spoons. These dishes are to be boiled after the usage. Family ought to call the doctor immediately. The patient should never practice self flu treatment because the flu is rather dangerous illness. During the continuation of the disease patient should be confined to bed. The space where the ill person stays ought to be regularly aired (3-4 times a day for 15-20 minutes.) The room should be washed every day as well. The members of the family, especially little children should wear masks to prevent disease. The ill person ought to be kept in warmth. The warm bathes are very useful. The food of the patient should be substantial and full of vitamins. The ill person ought to take much warm or hot drinks: like tea (with honey, lemon), milk etc.
Ill person is to take some medicine for coughing and heart if he has some respiratory or heart problems. Sometimes patient should be given some injections. Such medicine like interferon is rather effective and may be used even in case of prophylactic of the illness. The patients with the bad form of flu, especially with a danger of developing of the secondary bacterial infection should take antibiotics. But again all the medicine is to be taken according to the prescription of the doctor.
People who don’t like flu treatment have a chance to prevent it. To prevent flu person may be vaccinated. As usual vaccine doesn’t help everybody. Efficiency of it is 80 to 95%. After it only 1-2 vaccinated persons in 10 can fall ill with flu. But even though they usually suffer from flu in a light form. The patient is to be vaccinated 2 weeks before epidemic (or better 1-2 months) to form immunity. That is in October-November. The people should be vaccinated every year because the virus of flu changes very often. Every 30-40 years appears new type of virus. So every year new vaccine against flu appears. This vaccine may be given to children even at the age of 6 months. People who are more than 60 years old and have some heart problems, problems with the organs of breathing or metabolic disease cannot be vaccinated. Those people whose job is connected with being in public (teachers, doctors, drivers of public transport etc.) cannot be vaccinated too. As well as people who have allergy for proteins of the hen eggs which are concluded into the vaccine. For prevention of allergic reaction the person should stay under the observation of doctor or nurse during not less than 30 minutes after being vaccinated. As for the pregnant women they may be given a vaccine only in an emergency.

Healing Herbs, Medicinal Teas for Colds and Flu

by Annie Bond of http://www.care2.com/

Long before the advent of antihistamine tablets and specially formulated cold remedies, cold and flu sufferers turned to herbal teas to relieve their symptoms. Those homemade infusions were rich in vitamins, minerals and medicinal compounds. You can find commercial versions of these old-time remedies in most health food or natural grocery stores, or you can take a page out of the past and make your own. In the herbalist’s pharmacopoeia, specific herbs address particular symptoms, so we asked the experts to share their favorite blends.

Soothe a Sore Throat

A dry, scratchy throat often signals the onset of a cold, and over-the-counter syrups and lozenges just seem to sugarcoat the problem. Fortunately, nature provides some safe and easy-to-use alternatives. “Sore throats are greatly relieved by herbal tea,” says Brigitte Mars, herbalist and author of Healing Herbal Teas (Basic Health Media, Winter 2006). As a first line of defense, Mars prescribes marshmallow root (Althea officinalis) , an anti-inflammatory herb that’s “wonderfully soothing on the throat.” Unrelated to the gooey little campfire confections, this herb has a long, well-documented history of successfully treating irritated mucous membranes.

James Duke, author of The Green Pharmacy (Rodale, 1997), recommends two other herbs for throat discomfort: slippery elm (Ulmus rubra), an antiseptic and anti-allergic agent that literally slips down the throat, and licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory, licorice has been scientifically documented to break up phlegm, ease coughs and fight infections. A study at Bastyr University found that tea combining licorice, slippery elm and marshmallow is highly effective for reducing throat pain.

For sore throats accompanied by cold and flu symptoms, Mars suggests drinking stomach-soothing peppermint (Mentha x piperita). “It can lower a fever by helping you to sweat and release toxins naturally. It’s antiviral and user-friendly,” she explains. Mars also likes ginger (Zingiber officinale), which is “good for chills and aching muscles, and relieves nausea.” For extra measure, she adds elder (Sambuca nigra), shown by research to keep flu viruses at bay.

Breathe Easy

“When I have a difficult time breathing, I go for oolong because it opens up my lungs,” says Sara Martinelli, tea blender and owner of The Boulder Dushanbe Tea House in Boulder, Colorado. Indeed, black tea like oolong contains powerful expectorant compounds that help clear mucus from deep within the chest. The caffeine it packs is also a powerful bronchodilator. To take the edge off the caffeine, Martinelli mixes in calming chamomile (Matricaria recutita), touted for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. She also adds liberal portions of rose hips (Rosa canina), which, she says, “are high in vitamin C and taste great.”

For a respiratory remedy that relies just on herbal ingredients, Martinelli concocts a brew of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globules). Thyme has antiseptic properties that help heal infections, while rosemary contains disease-fighting compounds and eucalyptus cools inflamed tissues and eases congested lungs. She suggests sipping the tea or making a vapor tent by placing a towel over your head and breathing in the healing vapors.

Do-It-Yourself Blends

Want to create your own cold and flu teas? To get a sense of a herb’s individual flavor, begin with a “simple”-a tea steeped from a single herb such as echinacea (Echinacea var.), which Martinelli notes “is best used as a preventive before a cold strikes.” Place twoteaspoons in a tea ball or strainer and add to one cup of hot water; steep for 10 to 15 minutes and stir in honey. For more of Martinelli’s tea blends, check out www.boulderteahouse .com.

Sweeten Your Tea Naturally

Looking for a safe alternative to white sugar? Smart idea! Natural sweeteners often contain important nutrients that refined sugar lacks, plus they have fewer calories and may help you lower the risk of disease associated with high-sugar diets. One of these sweeteners may be just your cup of tea.

Agave syrup. Also called “nectar” or “honey water,” this syrup is tapped from the heart of the agave cactus-a plant long cultivated in Mexico and considered sacred by the Aztec. Fifty percent sweeter than table sugar yet with fewer calories per serving, it has a more neutral flavor than honey and dissolves easily in hot or cold beverages. It’s also low-glycemic, which means it gets absorbed into the blood stream slowly rather than producing a “sugar rush.”

Blackstrap molasses. Rich in minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium and
magnesium, blackstrap molasses has been considered a health food since pioneer days. Originally a product of the Caribbean Islands, it’s derived from sorghum (an Old World grass).

Honey. Made from flower nectar by the honeybee, honey takes on the color and flavor of the plant from which it was gathered-with alfalfa and clover honey being the most common. Like blackstrap molasses, honey is considered a nutritive sweetener because it contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. Plus, it has antibacterial properties and is soothing to the throat. Note: Honey is contraindicated for children less than a year old because it may contain harmful bacterium not easily assimilated by infants.

Stevia. Used for centuries as a sweetener in South America, this herb is more than 100 times sweeter than sugar yet is calorie-free. Research shows that stevia may help lower blood sugar, which suggests that it may be a good sugar alternative for diabetics.

Xylitol. This white crystalline substance is extracted from plants and is even produced in the human body. It looks and tastes like sugar (but with 60 percent fewer calories), and studies have shown it to have antibacterial effects against dental plaque and caries, and possibly to be diabetic-safe.

We Recommend:

FluGo is a safe, non-addictive, FDA-registered homeopathic remedy containing ingredients especially selected to temporarily relieve symptoms of the flu or cold like cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat and fatigue. FluGo should be taken at the first sign of a blocked nose, sneezing or sore throat to decrease the severity of flu or cold symptoms. This natural remedy works quickly to support the immune system and assist the body in its task of fighting invading germs. FluGo is a natural flu remedy taken internally and presented in small dissolving tablets. It is easy to ingest and hassle-free with no artificial colors or preservatives. As a result, FluGo can make all the difference, without compromising health.

and..

If you have a history of getting the ‘traditional’ one or two colds a year and/or a bout of flu, then Viral-Protec would be worth trying. The prime objective is to boost your resistance to colds and other viruses, stimulate your immune system to optimal levels, and increase antioxidant activity. It does this by utilizing a complex mix of ingredients which have proven anti-viral properties. Viral-Protec contains ingredients to help build up your immune system and fight off current and reoccurring symptoms.

What is a Stomach Flu ?

Some people believe in a so called “stomach flu”.

Actually the stomach flu has much in common with usual kind of flu. As for the doctors they say that stomach flu doesn’t exist, it is not some different kind of flu but common flu with the expressed symptoms of digestive disorder.

As usual it starts in the same way as a common flu. Ill person has high temperature, shiver, headache etc (this period is called incubatory period). Patient can have such symptoms for 1-2 days. But later he has the syndrome of digestive disorder. He loses his appetite, has coated and dry tongue, suffers from sickness, stomachache, sometimes he can vomit, have constipation, diarrhea (as usual it happens seldom and is caused not by a virus of flu but the reason of it can be some other infections) etc. As usual it’s children who can have such symptoms. But adults can suffer from stomach flu as well.
Sometimes ill person can even have symptoms similar to appendicitis. In such case he can be even taken to hospital with the diagnosis of appendicitis. As usual after a period of 1-2 days patient feels better even if his temperature can stay high.
What is the reason of digestive disorder during the flu? Can such symptoms be caused by the virus of flu? Actually the flu is a respiratory illness and if you have symptoms of stomach flu they can be caused by virus, germ or parasite infection. The reason of such symptoms can also be the intoxication of vegetative part of the nervous system.
As for the treatment of stomach flu you need some special medicine which can be prescribed by doctor. But at the same time the illness needs traditional treatment which is usually done in the case of common flu. But the patient should never practice self-treatment, because flu is rather dangerous illness.
